Stone Tyres: Why training matters when you’re opening an MOT station

As Stone Tyres continues to grow in St Helens, Merseyside, owner John Stone has decided to expand into a new workshop facility close to their existing site. The aim is to increase capacity, improve workflow, and introduce Class 4 and Class 7 MOT testing as part of the next stage of the business’s growth.

Getting MOT-ready with management training

Setting up an MOT test centre isn’t only about the physical workshop space and equipment. It also requires strong systems, clear accountability, and a solid understanding of DVSA requirements, especially when you’re responsible for day-to-day compliance.

To support this, John invested in the Level 3 Award in MOT Testing Centre Management through MOT Mastery. This qualification is mandatory for anyone looking to open and run an MOT testing station and covers:

  • The MOT Testing Guide
  • Management responsibilities for running a compliant test station
  • The wider requirements that sit around testing, record keeping, and oversight

John successfully completed the course and is now equipped with the knowledge needed to successfully manage a compliant MOT operation as the new facility comes online.

The bigger picture: workshop expansion and MOT readiness

Alongside his management training, the new workshop has been planned and equipped to support servicing work alongside MOT testing. The setup includes multiple two-post lifts and two MOT lanes, with associated Class 4 and Class 7 testing equipment to support an efficient test flow.

V-Tech’s MOT Projects division is proud to play a key role in the project management of this new build from start to finish. Their involvement includes:

  • Design and layout to create an efficient and modern workshop space
  • Site surveys to ensure the project meets all the required standards
  • Arranging groundwork and installation logistics
  • Assisting with the DVSA VT01 application to ensure the MOT bays meet all approval requirements
  • Sourcing and supplying quality garage equipment, including:
  • VeriCool V-549 dual gas aircon service machine

A practical next step for growing garages

Stone Tyres is a good example of how workshop growth and MOT capability go hand in hand with the right training. When facility, equipment, and management responsibilities are planned together, the business is well-positioned to deliver MOT testing confidently and compliantly from day one.

If you’re planning to open an MOT test centre, or just adding an MOT bay to an existing workshop, MOT Mastery can help you prepare with the training required to manage a compliant testing operation. Call our team on 0203 907 6385 or email info@motmastery.co.uk
